Termites

Let the X-pert team help you identify some key differences to help you spot and identify flying ants and termites.

Body Segmentation

Flying ants have a distinct body with three segments: head, thorax, and abdomen. Their body is pinched at the waist, giving them an hourglass appearance.

Antennae

Antennae are elbowed or bent. The antennae are visibly longer than those of termites.

Wings

Front wings are larger than hind wings, and they have different shapes. The wings are translucent and may be tinted brown.

Waist

The waist, or the connection between the thorax and abdomen, is narrow.

Behavior

Flying ants are generally not as destructive as termites. They may be attracted to light and are often seen flying around in the open.

Nesting

Flying ants build nests in soil or wood, and their nests are not as extensive as termite colonies.

Body Segmentation

Termites have a more uniform body without a distinct waist. The body is broadly joined without noticeable constriction between segments.

Antennae

Straight, beaded, or slightly curved antennae. Antennae are shorter than those of flying ants.

Wings

All four wings are of equal size and shape. Wings are often longer than the body and can extend beyond the abdomen. The wings are usually translucent and may be milky or smoky in color.

Waist

The connection between the thorax and abdomen is not as pronounced as in flying ants.

Behavior

Termites are more secretive and may avoid light. They often build mud tubes to protect themselves when moving between their nests and food sources. They are highly destructive to wood and cellulose materials.

Nesting

Termites build extensive colonies in soil or wood. They can cause significant structural damage if left untreated.
